Cabana has a huge love and respect for our wild animals. Most of you are aware of the multiple ornaments / sculptures we sell in Cabana of various animal representations, most of which are of giraffes and elephants.
We are fearful that in just a couple of generations the animals we hold dear are very much on the brink of extinction, their numbers are dwindling so fast (Elephant population 50% reduction in just 10 years !!!!) It is inadmissible and totally unacceptable that man has allowed this to happen through poaching, claiming their land, the appetite for bush meat and the illegal trade for their horns, tusks, skins and hides.
We would like to do our bit to help no matter how small. If everyone starts with just a little good intention the huge collective can make an enormous difference. We have decided to subscribe, donate and affiliate ourselves to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
The Sheldrick foundation is one of Africa’s oldest wildlife charities working to ensure a sustainable future for all wildlife, habitats and the communities that they share. They are big on conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife in East Africa – particularly of elephants and rhinos.
The foundation has multiple on going projects including anti-poaching, safe guarding and protecting the natural environment, providing, educating and enhancing community awareness so that man and animal can find the balance and harmony to co-exist. It addresses animal welfare issues, rescues and provides veterinary assistance to animals in need and hand rears orphaned elephants and rhinos before releasing them back into a protected wild habitat.
Cabana has adopted three young orphans at the Trust and looks forward to witnessing their progression and release in years to come. Each one has their very own personality traits.
Apollo (great name) is a black rhino male only 16 months old. He was rescued September last year and is currently being hand raised. He was found alongside his deceased mother at the Tsavo West National Park and has has been taken to Kaluku, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust not too far from where he was born.
Roho is a male elephant of 18 months and was rescued October last year. A patrolling aircraft looking for poachers spotted him huddled alongside his deceased mother. His rescue was quite extraordinary. The mother had tried to get away from poachers and was protecting her young calf. They had fled to a very high inhospitable area. When the ground team eventually located Roho they were unable to rescue him there as the terrain was so difficult. They had to coax, shepherd, carry his little body down a dangerous rocky hill with him terrified and resisting all the way. Eventually at the bottom he was then rescued by helicopter.
Pika Pika is a female elephant of 2 years. She was found via an aerial patrol last September. She was walking with 5 adult bulls and no females. She still needed milk which none of the bulls could provide. Many elephants had left the Tsavo National Park in search for food as this was a dryer than usual season. The area they had moved into had human-wildlife conflict which resulted in many calves being left abandoned. Many calves latch on to bulls to protect them from lions and hyenas but they cannot provide the milk that they so need. A difficult rescue ensued.
We will be donating on a regular basis and by buying from Cabana you will be helping us to support this fabulous trust and the crucial work they are undertaking. The Sheldrick foundation will also supply us with a donation bucket which will be found by the till.
We will keep you updated on the orphans progress and finding out more about them as they develop and grow. We will have their full stories in store.
